Schlaegels to celebrate 60th anniversary
Gary and Marian Schlaegel of rural Whiting will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Friday, Aug. 23. They were married at Ozawkie Evangelical United Brethren Church.
Gary and Marian met while Marian was a student nurse at Stormont Vail School of Nursing and Gary was a hospitalized patient at Stormont Vail Hospital following knee surgery. He was allowed to call on her after he was discharged, they were engaged a month later and married a year later the day after Marian graduated from nursing school.
Gary and Marian owned and operated a Grade A dairy farm from 1969 to 1986. They also started the businesses of Schlaegel Tax and Accounting and Schlaegel Popcorn. Marian retired from nursing in 1998.
Gary and Marian have two daughters, Cheryl Yingst and her husband, Jon, and Gayla Reece and her husband, Eric; five grandchildren, Jacob and his wife, Molly, Jason and his wife, Sara, Olivia Yingst, Tanner and his wife, Taylor, and Zachery Reese; and one great-grandchild, Henry Dee Yingst.
