Hospital expansion shows community support

If anyone asks whether the Holton and Jackson County area is progressive and forward-thinking, they need to look no further than Friday’s groundbreaking ceremony for Holton Community Hospital’s $14.6 million expansion and renovation project for the answer in the affirmative!

Yes, the project says. We are embracing the future!

The groundbreaking ceremony was made possible by community members who – in less than a year - donated or pledged the more than $2 million in local funds needed to satisfy a loan requirement and to get the project going.

Actual construction work for the project is set to begin this week and will take up to 16 months to complete. During that time, visitors to the hospital should expect parking changes to allow for the construction.

The hospital expansion and renovation will allow more in-house services to be offered to area residents, such as pulmonary function testing and nuclear medicine. The expansion project will also include additions to the hospital’s emergency department, a new 6,594-square foot clinic building, an updated operating area, a renovated specialty clinic, new office space and new meeting and training space, plus some private patient rooms.

It is impressive to see the community appreciating and supporting the local hospital. As has been stated on this opinion page many times before, there is nothing that improves a community’s quality of life more than having its own local hospital - just ask anyone who lives in a community that does not have its own hospital.
