Don't let summer slip away from you too soon

Here in Holton and Jackson County, much of what’s good about our country today, I think, is reflected in our normal, everyday lives.

Some times, however, it is easy to take it for granted.

Take summer, for example.

Summer in a small town means things like kids swimming at the local pool to cool off, playing tennis at the tennis courts, enjoying picnics in the parks, fishing in our local lakes, streams and ponds, ball games for boys and girls in the evenings, a leisurely round of golf at the local course and catching a cool breeze on your back porch or deck in the evenings while you watch the neighborhood kids try to catch fireflies.

The list of the little simple things in our lives goes on and on and everyone can add a few more little things to their own list.

People who live in the cities don’t know what they’re missing.

What are your favorite things about the summer around here?

One of mine is the aroma and the picturesque scene of a freshly-cut hay field. You can’t find that in the big cities.

Watching kids play ball also brings back a lot of good memories of my own youth.

We have a lot of good things going on but in the blink of your eye the wonderful summer days can slip away too quickly.

Don’t let that happen to you. Take time to smell the roses - and the freshly-cut hay.
