Walter Flowers 1933-2024
Walter LaCosta “Lee” Flowers, 91, of Overbrook, passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2024, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
He was born Oct. 29, 1933, in Mars Bluff, S.C., the son of Lacy Lacosta and Sallie Pearl (Streett) Flowers.
He attended the Boys Industrial School, earning his GED during his military training. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for three years and the United States Air Force for 17 years. He retired in 1971, earning rank at Tech Sgt.
After retirement, Walter worked for the State of Kansas for 27 years, earning title of Registered Sanitarian.
Walter was a member of the Topeka Bible Church, Osage County Trail Club and Topeka Ski Club. He was also an avid K-State fan and season ticket holder for many years.
He married Janet Lorraine Brockman on June 16, 1957, in Holton. They celebrated more than 67 years of marriage.
Survivors include his wife, Janet, of the home; two daughters, Amber R. Coffman (Monte) of Coffeyville and April Dawn Flowers of Topeka; a sister, Ernestine Illar (Taylor) of Chesterfield, S.C.; three grandchildren, Caleb and Zac Coffman and Michal Lattimore (Rayvon); and three great-grandchildren, Rayvon Jr., Xavier and Mia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lacy and Sallie Flowers; four sisters, Williadean Orthalia Isgett, Olga Lee Sauls, Cynthia Mae Barnhill and Patricia Joann Krauser; and three brothers, William “Bill,” Foster Fred and Baby Ashley Sherrill Flowers and brother, William Kenlaw Foxworth.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with burial to follow in Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.
