Sylvester Masqua 1950-2016
Sylvester “Cheeg-Wah” Dean Masqua, 65, Horton, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.
He was born Oct. 8, 1950, in Horton, the son of Sylvester and Geraldine Shopteese Masqua.
Mr. Masqua worked as a heavy equipment operator in his earlier years for the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas and McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. He later worked as a health care provider for several years until retiring.
He was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas and Drum Religion.
Survivors include two sons, Stacy Lee Masqua, in Missouri, and Dominic Masqua, Horton; three daughters, Jessica Masqua, Chancy Masqua and Chelsea Masqua, all of Horton; four sisters, Lynia “Cham” Eagle, Horton, Lily Hall, Mayetta, Deniece Masqua, Horton, and Gina Wahweotten, Mayetta; uncle and aunt, Steve Cadue and Angie Cadue; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald Ray Masqua and Darrell R. Masqua; a son, Christopher Masqua; and two nephews, Ronald John Allen Jr. and Timothy W. Wahweotten.
Drum services will be held at 5 p.m. today at the Kickapoo Community Building on the Kickapoo Reservation. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kennekuk Indian Cemetery on the Kickapoo Reservation. Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton is in charge of arrangements.
