Sarah Hurt 1984-2026

Sarah Jane Hurt, “Mnis-Wettno-Kwe,” 42, Topeka, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

She was born Feb. 19, 1984, in Topeka, the daughter of Samuel Hurt and Sharon Belair.

Sarah was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Drum Religion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Hurt and Sharon Belair; and her grandparents, Robert and Lorene Jackson.

Survivors include three daughters, Luisa Beatrice Reyna, Octavia Portillo Hurt and Deena Rochelle Jones; her stepparents, Wamp Shopteese and Sebrina Winsea; a brother, Albert Belair; a sister, Theresa Belair; and a grandson, Lucian Araziel Rocha.

Ms. Hurt will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt, where a visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. A supper and wake will be held Wednesday evening at the Nozhackum Hall. Burial will be held Thursday morning, Sept. 10 in Prairie Peoples Cemetery.
