Peggy Romero 1957-2025

Peggy C. Romero, 67, Horton, died Friday, April 25, 2025, at her daughter’s home with family by her side.

She was born Dec. 7, 1957, in Liberal, the daughter of Rosalie Alires and Jimmy Romero.

Ms. Romero was a certified nurse’s aide. She later was a homemaker.

She was a Catholic and taught Sunday school at Our Lady of the Snows on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation.

She married Richard Wabaunsee. They divorced. She married Dewey James Jessepe on May 17, 1995. He died Feb. 18, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Rosalie; her dad, Jimmy Romero; a son, Richard Wabaunsee Jr.; a daughter, Lasie Wabaunsee; her grandmother, Eva Romero; five brothers, George Gonzalez, Raymond Romero, Timothy Alires, James Romero and Allen Romero; and a sister, Susie Martinez.

Survivors include a daughter, Lindsey Wabaunsee, Topeka; three sons, Ricky Wabaunsee, Horton, and Clifton Wabaunsee and Gregory Wabaunsee. both of Topeka; three sisters, Joyce Arredondo and husband Javier, Beverly Romero and Theresa Alires, all of Liberal; two brothers, Johnny Gonzales, Wichita, and Jerry Romero, Belton, Texas; four grandsons, Dominic Wabaunsee, Aurora, Colo., Simon Mesa, Holton, and twins Colton Wabaunsee, Seminole, Okla., and Phoenix Wabaunsee, Green Bay, Wisc.; two granddaughters, Jalisa “Big Girl” Wabaunsee, Green Bay, Wisc., and Rosalind “Sister Girl” Wabaunsee, Topeka; and many nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. that day at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1 at the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal.
