Paul Scheid 1924-2025

Paul Leroy Scheid, 100, of Whiting, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, at his home with family at his side.
He was born Aug. 29, 1924, in rural Holton, the middle son of Virgil Jesse and Daisy Irene (Hollenbeck) Scheid.
Paul graduated from Bennett High School in 1942 in Bennett, Colo. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1943-1946, during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant.
He married Betty Marie Cochren of Whiting on Oct. 3, 1947, in Hiawatha. She preceded him in death on Nov. 14, 2020, after 73 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Daisy Scheid; and two brothers, Earl and Ralph Scheid.
As a farmer for the majority of his life, he also retired from the United States Postal Service as the Whiting postmaster after 31 years.
Paul was a member of Whiting United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, VFW Post 1367 and a 50-plus-year member of Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include his three children, Paula S. Scheid (Stephen Rosengren) of Topeka, Marcia Jo Scheid Watkins (Galen) of Whiting and Mark W. Scheid (Glenda Herl) of Topeka; five grandchildren, Joshua Watkins (Ericka), Zachary Watkins (Cori), Matthew Watkins (Kristin), Megan Martin (Anthony) and Jared Herl (Allison); 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 5 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will follow at Springhill Cemetery in Whiting. Paul will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time on Wednesday.
