Melba Nicol 1938-2022

Melba Nicol, 83, Meriden, formerly of Mayetta, died Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at her home.

She was born Nov. 13, 1938, in Hood River, Ore., the daughter of Melvin and Mary Jane Leonard Brown. She graduated from Silver Lake High School.

Mrs. Nicol operated a dog kennel for many years. She also was a seamstress and a foster parent and had owned and operated Melba’s Diner in Mayetta.

She was a member of Mayetta Christian Church and an EHU Unit and was a 4-H leader.

She married William “Bill” Nicol on Oct. 18, 1959, in Topeka. He died Dec. 7, 2005.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Nicol and wife Lana, Topeka, and Mitchell Nicol and wife Stephannie, Soldier; two daughters, Cheryl Marlane Nicol, Meriden, and Marchelle Lane and husband Kevin, Topeka; two sisters, Marvelee Self and husband Nick, Topeka, and Marvella Bailey, Fort Worth, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Half-Day Cemetery. Melba will lie in state after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where family and friends will meet from 4 p.m to 6 p.m.
