Mary Ann Nissen 1930-2016

 

Mary Ann Nissen, 85, Wetmore, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2016. at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

She was born July 27, 1930, in Holton, the daughter of John Mar­tin and Hazel V. (Ray) Schlodder. She attended Hazel Grove Ele­mentary School and graduated from Wetmore High School in 1948.

On Feb. 10, 1950, Mary Ann married Leonard E. Nissen in Wetmore. The couple had lived most of their lives on the family farm in the Wetmore community. In the early '50s they lived in Trenton, N.J., and Belleville, Ill., while Leonard served in the United States Air Force.

Mary Ann managed Wetmore Grocery that she and Leonard owned and operated from 1977-1999. After her retirement, Mary Ann enjoyed sewing, quilting, and gardening.

She was a member of the Wet­more American Legion Auxiliary (Levick-Barrett Post 282) and of the Wetmore United Methodist Church.

Leonard preceded Mary Ann in death on Oct. 12, 2013 after 63 years of marriage.

Mary Ann is survived by her daughters, Evette Nissen (Richard Howard) of Columbia, Mo., Cindy Grollmes (Mark) of Circleville and Tammy Pfrang (Keith) of Fort Worth, Texas; and her six grand­children, Matt Grollmes (Jamie), Doug Grollmes, Sam Pfrang, Olivia Pfrang, Michael Howard (Maddie) and James Pfrang (Sara). In addi­tion to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Louise Fernkopf, and her brother, John Schlodder Jr.

Funeral services were held Mon­day, July 11 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial followed in Wetmore Cemetery.
