Martie Mitchell 1971-2024

Martie Ann “Tahgo” Mitchell, 53, Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024, at her home.

She was born July 7, 1971, in Holton, the daughter of Gary and Voncile Potts Mitchell. She graduated from Royal Valley High School and attended Haskell Indian Junior College and Washburn University.

Ms. Mitchell worked at Prairie Band Potawatomi Casino.

She was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Drum Religion.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gary Mitchell.

Survivors include her mother, Voncile Mitchell; her adopted father, Kabot Hale; a sister, Joanna “Dumps” Mitchell; a brother, Willie Potts; children, Cheyenne “Kek” Simon (“Kahke”) and Daniel “Pat-ko-shuk” Mitchell-Alvarado (Precious); five grandchildren, KwehKwehGee, Shawnosh, Kishkokwe Simon and Tekako and Waksha Mitchell; a niece, Tara Mitchell (Riston); two nephews, Waskeh Littleaxe and Luis Ortiz (Sarah); two great-nieces, Shug and Cora; six great-nephews, Monte, Massko, Wabsai, Keewatum, Biggs and Lorenzo; and adopted grandmothers, Venida Chenault and Judy Wabaunsee, both of Mayetta.

Ms. Mitchell will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27 and until 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Drum services will be held Saturday evening at the Potawatomi Dance Ground. Burial will be held Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Cemetery.
