Marie Gunther 1933-2024

Marie Vietta Gunther, 90, of Holton, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

She was born March 30, 1933, in Maple Hill, the daughter of John Milton and Thelma Marie (Clark) Hedges. 

Marie graduated from Denison High School in 1950. She was a lifelong member of the Denison community. She was a secretary at Denison Grade School from 1956 to 1990 and a school aide at Holton Elementary School from 1990 to 1998.

She was a member of Denison Bible Church, teaching Sunday school, and she was treasurer for many years. She was also a member of Women’s Missionary Society.

Marie married Clair F. Gunther on June 25, 1950, in Holton. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 2015, after 65 years of marriage. 

Survivors include her daughter, Dixie Battey (Randy) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; her son, Bruce Gunther (Reggi) of Topeka; a brother, John C. Hedges of Augusta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Michael, Craig, Shaun, Jonathan, Lindsey and Joanna; eight great-grandchildren, Mason, Tanner, Hudson, Declan, Graham, Elian, James and Sierra; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Robert, Fabian and Alondra. 

She was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Gunther; daughter-in-law, Rogene Gunther; brother, James Hedges; sister, Peggy McCory; and a grandson, Ryan Gunther.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Denison Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
