Joyce Peterson 1959-2024

Joyce Ann Peterson (Shields), 64, of Hoyt, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She died from complications from an attempted suicide due to failing physical and mental health.

She was born July 21, 1959, in Hiawatha, the daughter of Richard and Betty Bowen Shields. She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1977.

She married Ron Peterson on March 25, 1978, in Hiawatha. He survives, of the home.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and half-brother, Robert Richard Shields.

Other survivors include two sons, Ryan Peterson (Tricia), Topeka, and Drew Peterson (Chelsye), Tonganoxie; and three wonderful grandchildren, a granddaughter, Penelope (Princess Penny), and two grandsons, Oscar, and Asher. She was very proud of all of them. Two sisters also survive, Sharon Winkelbauer (Tom), Leavenworth, and Linda Money (Les), Ocala, Fla.; along with several nieces and nephews.

Per Joyce’s request, there will be no services. A Meet ’n Greet will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 at the Hoyt Community Center. Please join the family for food and reminiscing. Online condolences may be made at chapeloaksfuneralhome.com
