John Nichols 1944-2025

John Douglas Nichols, 80, of Mayetta, died Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at his home with family by his side.
He was born July 27, 1944, in Seneca. He was the son of Rollen Aaron and Nancy Frances (Talley) Nichols.
He attended school in Corning, Lima, Ohio, and Holton and graduated in 1962 from Hoyt High School in Hoyt. He served in the U.S. Air Force as airman 2 and later the Air National Guard as staff sergeant. He was in the first apprenticeship program at Goodyear and worked there until he medically retired in 1997.
John married Darlene Castor on Aug. 30, 1966. They have two sons, Jason Nichols of Oskaloosa and Michael Nichols (who preceded him in death).
Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years; a son, Jason Nichols (Angie); granddaughters, Samantha Rubio (Clayton) and Whitney Lemon (Kyle); great-grandchildren, Paxton and Madeline; a sister, Margie Thompson of Mayetta; and a sister-in-law, Joan Nichols of River Oaks, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael; a brother, Raymond Nichols; and parents and grandparents.
John took pride in all he did and all he had. He loved the outdoors, gardening, flowers and his yard. He also enjoyed being on his tractor and skid steer loader at the farm, whether it was work or play. He had to be busy all the time. If he put his mind to it, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t make and find an easier way to do it. It seems he always had a project or was thinking up one to do. He loved his wife, Darlene, and family. The time spent with his son was very important to him.
Cremation is planned. John has requested there be no services, visitation or celebration of life.
Memorials may be given to Faith Hospice, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436. To leave a special message for the family, please visit www.mercerfuneralhomes.com
