John Kerr 1968-2026
John Allen “Otis” Kerr, 58, of Whiting, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at his home.
He was born Feb. 29, 1968, in Holton, the son of John Dennis and Margaret Mary (Teetzel) Kerr.
Otis attended Holton High School and while there, also enrolled in Vo-Tech’s Auto Body program, graduating from both in 1986. He began his career at Clark Chevrolet in Holton, where he learned the trade that would define his life. After several years, he moved on to Shorey Body Shop in Topeka and later spent many years at Kirk’s Body Shop in Holton, building a reputation for craftsmanship and pride in his work.
Eventually, longtime friend and coworker Charlie Scheidegger persuaded Otis — no small feat—to join him at Scheidegger Collision Services. There, Otis spent his final three years doing what he loved: straightening metal and creating show-stopping bodywork.
Otis is survived by his daughter, Kayla Minner (Tanner Calvin - Otis commented Tanner will be her husband someday??) of Tecumseh; brother Jason Kerr (Tina) of Topeka; two grandchildren, Finley and Fischer; two nieces, Dyna Varela (Kevin) and Cortlin Roles (Wyatt); nephew, Jared Kerr (fiancé, Ryan); two great-nieces, Lily and Paisley; and many extended family members and friends who meant the world to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Kerr; and a brother, James Kerr.
Otis never met a stranger. If you knew him, you didn’t just like him — you loved him. He was truly one of a kind. After a first introduction, you might walk away wondering what just happened — but before long, you realized you’d gained a friend for life.
In true Otis, fashion, he often told his brother that when his time came, he wanted to be “fed to the hogs.” After some consideration — and a few unanswered calls — that request was declined. The family has entrusted his care to Mercer Funeral Home.
Celebration of Life will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 29 at the Whiting Gym.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercer Funeral Home to help with expenses, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436. To leave a special message for the family, please visit www.mercerfuneralhomes.com
