JoAnn Shumaker 1938-2022

JoAnn Eilene Shumaker, 84, Topeka, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, at Oakley Place Senior Living in Topeka.

She was born April 5, 1938, in Vermillion, the daughter of Clifton and Opal Skillet Holland. She graduated from Centralia High School in 1956.

Mrs. Shumaker moved to Topeka, where she worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone. She later worked for Pricket and Onek Architects, Max Baker, Gene Abel Trucking and Falley’s Grocery Store, all in Topeka.

She attended Crestview United Methodist Church in Topeka.

She married John F. Shumaker on April 20, 1957, in Centralia. He died Sept. 7, 2018. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roy A. Shumaker.

Survivors include a son, Roger Shumaker and wife Susan, Topeka; a daughter, Janis Ackerman and husband Eric, Topeka; four grandchildren, Brandon Blanco, Brooke Ackerman, Ryan Shumaker and Eric Shumaker; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12 in Wetmore Cemetery. Mrs. Shumaker will lie in state beginning Friday, Sept. 9 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
