Jeanette Urista 1961-2025

Jeanette Crystal Urista, “Shew In,” 64, Horton, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025, at Amberwell Hospital in Hiawatha.

She was born Oct. 3, 1961, in Holton, the daughter of James and Aletha Jean Masquat Hale.

Ms. Urista had worked at different nursing homes as a certified nurse’s aide and for Deffenbaugh Trash Service in Kansas City. She had also been a caregiver for her father.

She was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas and the Drum Religion.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Marie Hale, of the home; two brothers, LaVerne Hale and wife Paula, Mayetta, and John Hale, Holton; a sister, Rayne Hale, Holton; four grandchildren, Starlene Hale Bland and husband Gregory, Leondre Hale and wife Danielle, James Hale and Leonna Hale; six great-grandchildren, Nachelle Williams, Israel Hale, Richmond Lewis, Mia Hale, Landyn Hale and Normani Hale; and many nieces and nephews.

A wake service was held Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Dance Ground west of Mayetta. Burial was held Sunday in Matwe-Shobney Cemetery. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
