Harlan Barnett 1943-2018
Worron Harlan Barnett, 75, of Melbourne, Ark., formerly of Soldier and Perry, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018, at his home with his wife at his side.
He was born March 16, 1943, at Perry, the son of Glenn Elwood and Helen Marguerite Killinger Barnett. He was a 1961 graduate of Perry Rural High School.
He worked for Goodyear Tire Company in Topeka, retiring in 1998 after 33 years. He was a Cattleman and Stockman and he and wife Sandy bred, raised, trained and showed foundation quarter horses under the HS Bar brand from 1997-2013 at their ranch in Soldier.
Harlan was a member of the Perry Christian Church and more recently attended Circleville Christian Church, Cowboy service. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 307 in Topeka, a life member of the Kansas and National Foundation Quarter Horse Review Association and a member of the Circleville Saddle Club.
He married Areta Marie Jones on Nov. 9, 1962. They later divorced. He married Sandra June Gier Mauldin on March 19, 1995, on the ranch in Soldier. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Danial (Wendy) Barnett, Hoyt, and Clinton (Jessica) Barnett, Topeka; two stepsons, Daniel (Jamie) Mauldin, Wamego, and Christopher Mauldin, Derby; a daughter, Suzanne (Leon) Conger, Holton; a granddaughter raised as a daughter, Sydney Marie Barnett, Grandview Plaza; two sisters, Lucy L. Doxon, Lincoln, Neb., and Linda L. (Dan) Foltz, Perry; three brothers, Laurel “Barney” (Debbie) Barnett, Oskaloosa, Logan (Janet) Barnett, Perry, and Gus (Cathy) Barnett, Oskaloosa; nine grandchildren, Mat (Heather) Conger, Onaga, Sam Conger, Hutchison, Alex Barnett, Overland Park, Bryar Barnett, Hoyt, Kristy Ann Barnett, Eudora, Corah Barnett, Topeka, Riley Mauldin, Topeka, and Dawson Mauldin, Wamego; 10 great-grandchildren, Keegan Wood, Bryson Conger, Atalie Conger, Ember Conger, Abel Conger, Maddox Wilson, Anna Belle Wilson, Camber–June Barnett, Thomas–Grey Barnett and Harlyn–Rose Barnett; a sister-in-law and caretaker, Deborah Kerr, Melbourne, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Andy Conger; and a sister, Ava E. Abel.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 at Barnett Family Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Burial will follow in Buster Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
