Grace Bender 1932-2024

Grace D. Bender, 92, Lee’s Summit, Mo., formerly of Whiting, died Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at John Knox Care Center in Lee’s Summit.

She was born Jan. 2, 1932, in Whiting, the daughter of Charles Henry and Ruth Mercer Chick. She grew up in Whiting, where she attended school prior to graduating high school.

Mrs. Bender and her husband owned and operated Carquest Auto Parts in Meriden for many years before retiring to Bella Vista, Ark. She moved to John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit in 2016 to be closer to family.

She was a Methodist, a member of the 18-hole women’s golf league in Bella Vista and organized a Kansas club.

She married Charles W. Bender Jr. in 1952 in Whiting. He died Sept. 16, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lloyd Chick and Donald Chick; and two sisters, Hazel Miles and Leona McQueen.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Bender, Topeka, and Steve Bender and wife DeAnn, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; a brother, Duane Chick; a sister, Nadine Clay; three granddaughters, Christa, Michele and Natalie; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29 at Springhill Cemetery in Whiting.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
