Gordon Kern 1926-2016
Gordon L. Kern, 89, Mayetta, died Saturday, April 9, 2016, at his home.
He was born June 21, 1926, on a farm in rural Mayetta, the son of Everett B. and Lucy Hunter Kern. He attended Mayetta High School.
Mr. Kern served with the U.S. Navy in WWII and the Korean War.
He was a member of Holton VFW, Moose Lodge in Topeka, AQHA and Mayetta Cutting Horse Club.
He married Wilma J. Anderson on Jan. 25, 1947, in Topeka. She died Sept. 28, 2004. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Hartman and Mary Lois Huggins; and two brothers, Creston and Cecil Kern.
Survivors include four children, Linda Maxwell and husband Gary, Mayetta, Debra Partlow and husband Barry, DeSoto, Rick Kern and wife Jenell, Topeka, and Lori Toothaker, Mayetta; two sisters, Laura Eigenman and husband Comyn and Carole Hainline, all of Mayetta; a brother, Darrell Kern and wife Sally, Mayetta; 10 grandchildren, Brian, Kathy, Kelly, Kevin, Jennifer, Cliff, Garrett, Caleb, Travis and Cody; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will follow in Mayetta Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
