Gerald Schweitzer 1945-2026

Gerald Lee Schweitzer, age 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, in his home surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on June 13, 1945, in Holton, a son of the late Harold Schweitzer and Bertha “Midge” Dunlap Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sandra Kay (Mayhew) Schweitzer; two daughters, DeAnna Wynkoop and Leann (Rob) Reschke, both of Topeka; and four grandchildren: Keith Wynkoop, Greg Wynkoop, Brittnee Wynkoop and Bradley Reschke, all of Topeka.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William “Bill” Schweitzer; and his granddaughter, Cheyanne Hare.

Gerald was raised in Goff during his early childhood before his family moved to Topeka, where he attended Topeka High School. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, earning a Rifle Marksman badge during his service.

He retired from the City of Topeka, Transportation Operations Division, Street Section, in 2007. Prior to that, he worked as a realtor and spent many years at Goodyear.

Gerald was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather. He loved his family, hunting, fishing, tinkering on cars and working on home projects. He was a gun enthusiast for most of his life. He enjoyed road trips with his wife to Westmoreland, to visit the old family cabin at the Rock Creek Valley Historical Society Museum. Gerald spoke daily with his brother and best friend, reminiscing about better days gone by. He was known for his orneriness, boisterous voice and exuberant story telling.

At the family’s request, there will be no service at this time. Private family service will be held at a later date.
