Gene Matchie 1969-2026

Eugene Curtis “Gene” “Wab nuk she” Matchie, 56, Mayetta, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, at Stormont-Vail Hospital.

He was born Sept. 19, 1969, in Holton, the son of Roland Joseph and Janis Marie Pahmahmie Matchie. He attended Holton High School, then earned his GED and attended a vocational school in Topeka.

Mr. Matchie was a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic, working for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s road and bridge and transportation departments. He had also worked for Lovvorn Brothers in Holton and was a slot tech at Prairie Band Casino.

He was a Christian and a member of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

He married Theresa Marie Zacharias on May 23, 1992, in Platte County, Mo. She survives.

Other survivors include his parents, Roland and Janis Matchie, Holton; three children, Amanda McFarland and husband Philip, Topeka, Rebecca Fitzpatrick and husband Wesley, Mayetta, and Michael Matchie and fiancee Haley Vaughn, Tonganoxie; two sisters, Jolene Matchie and Lydia Matchie, both of Holton; a brother, Joseph Matchie, Holton; and eight grandchildren, Curtis, Krissi, Autumn, Skyler, Lexus, Sophia, Austin and Kaelyn.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, with burial to follow at Thunder Eagle Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 at the funeral home.
