Evelyn Ramirez 1923-2016
Josephine “Evelyn” Ramirez, 93, Lawrence, formerly of Horton, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016, at Bridge Haven Village in Lawrence.
She was born Jan. 7, 1923, in Bismarck, N.D., the daughter of George and Leah Aiken Jeannotte. She graduated from Haskell Institute in Lawrence.
Mrs. Ramirez served as a Yeoman 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She separated from the Waves from Great Lakes, Ill. She later worked at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Horton, starting as a secretary and retiring as chief realty officer.
She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and Altar Society, Horton Hospital Auxiliary, lifelong member of Horton American Legion 415, VFW and Kickapoo American Legion 415. She served on the USD 430 School Board and as a Horton Housing Authority board member, volunteered as a SCHICK counselor and distributed commodities. She also served as president and was member of the Horton Senior Citizens. She was a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.
She married Greg Ramirez on Sept. 6, 1947 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Horton. He survives.
Other survivors include five daughters, Patty Battese and husband Mitch, Lawrence, Gloria Meerpohl and husband Mike, Holton, Barbara Tucker and husband Jim, Baldwin City, Mona Cortez and husband Chris, Horton, and Marlise Wilson and husband Kenny, Horton; three sons, Lawrence Ramirez and wife Leigh, Independence, Mo., Steve Ramirez and wife Carla, Lawrence, and Vincent Ramirez and wife Stefanie, Casa Grande, Ariz.; a brother, Elmer “Buzz” Jeannotte and wife Marlene, Horton; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral mass was held Friday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Horton. Burial was held in St. Leo’s Cemetery.
