Evelyn Hammersmith 1949-2015

Evelyn Hammersmith, 65, Horton, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, at Vintage Park in Hiawatha.
She was born Oct. 14, 1949, in Atchison, the daughter of Marvin and Alta Armstrong Cox. She graduated from ACCHS in 1967 and later attended cosmetology school in Topeka.
Mrs. Hammersmith opened her own hair salon, Silver Shears, in Horton in 1996. She retired in August 2012 and sold her business.
She was a member of Muscotah United Church.
She married Dennis Hammersmith on May 9, 1975, in Topeka. He survives.
Other survivors include four sons, Matt Hammersmith and wife Staci and Shawn Mercer, both of Horton, Edward Hammersmith and wife Marian, Overland Park, and John Hammersmith and wife Teresa, Branson, Mo.; two daughters, Michelle Parker and husband Jeff, Topeka, and Paula Nelson and husband Brad, Kimberling City, Mo.; a brother, Michael Cox, Topeka; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gary Armstrong.
Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Horton. Burial was held in St. Leo’s Catholic Cemetery.
