Duane Chick 1934-2024

Duane E. Chick passed away on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024, at the age of 90 in Salina.

He was born Aug. 18, 1934, at the Horton Hospital in Horton, to Charles and Ruth (Banks) Chick.

Duane spent most of his life in Whiting. He went to Banks Country Elementary School in Whiting Township and graduated from Whiting High School. Proud of his family and its legacy, Duane was a lifelong farmer and cattleman, working on the Chick family farm. Ever hardworking, Duane also spent years as a radiographer and film reader at Atchison Casting.

Duane married his loving wife, Betty M. Larson, on Aug. 21, 1955, and they shared 69 years of marriage together.  Duane was a devoted father and shared his love of the farm with their daughter, Cheryl.

Duane demonstrated his love for his country as a member of the Army Reserves from 1957 to 1963. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of American Legion Post 288 of Everest and a member of the Lions Club of Everest. Following in his father’s footsteps, he also spent several years as Whiting Township Clerk.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lloyd Chick and Donald Chick; and his sisters, Leona McQueen, Hazel Ruth Miles and Grace Bender.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Cheryl Meier and spouse Dr. Michael Meier of Salina; his grandchildren, Dr. Leah (Jacob) Peterson of Salina and Dr. Isaac (Theresa) Meier of Lincoln, Neb.; great-grandchildren, August and Vivienne Peterson and Maxwell and Margaret Meier; and his sister, Nadine Clay of Broken Arrow, Okla.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m.
