Dr. Mark Bettencourt 1960-2015
Dr. Mark Laton Bettencourt, 54, Wamego, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, in a traffic accident on Cayman Brac in the Cayman Islands.
He was born Dec. 23, 1960, in Oakland, Calif., the son of Lee and Martha Elder Bettencourt. He grew up in Havensville and graduated from Onaga High School in 1979. He received a bachelor of science degree from Kansas State University and his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1986 from the University of Houston School of Optometry.
Dr. Bettencourt practiced in Wichita Falls, Texas, before starting Bettencourt Eye Care in Wamego in 1994. He was the owner and operator of Vision Source offices in Wamego and Manhattan and had also owned and operated an office in Holton from 1999 to 2005.
He was an active member of St Bernard's Parish in Wamego, a member of the St. Bernard Knights of Columbus, Kansas Director of Vision Source, Manhattan Konza Rotary Club, American Optometric Association, Kansas Optometric Association and a past member of the Wamego USD 320 school board.
He married Angie Lang Bettencourt in 2000 in Wamego. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Layton, and three daughters, Morgan, Hadley and Grace, all of the home; his parents, Lee and Martha Bettencourt, Wamego; a brother, John Bettencourt and wife Kathy, Wamego; three sisters, Laura Bettencourt, Wamego, Sandra Roberts and husband Tyler, Frisco, Texas, and Linda McDiffett and husband Cole, Wamego; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are pending with Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.
