Dr. Harold M. Riley 1922-2017

 

Two days after celebrating 73 years of marriage to his true love, Dr. Harold M. Riley, 94, passed  on Jan. 31, 2017 after a long and dis­tinguished life and career.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hibbs Riley, and two chil­dren, Betty R. Padgett of Clemson, S.C., and James H. Riley of Sara­sota, Fla. He was predeceased by a brother, George E. Riley.

Born Nov. 13, 1922, in Holton, Harold was the son of the late Bertha Brockelman and Martin Riley. He was raised on a small farm bordering the Potawatomi In­dian reservation and he was edu­cated in a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Kansas State University with a B.A. and re­ceived his Masters and P.H.D. from Michigan State University. He served from 1943 to 1946 in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Harold M. Riley was a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics at Michigan State University.  He was an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University from 1948 to 1951, and then joined the Agricultural Economics Faculty at Michigan State University in 1951.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers who attended our father at Clemson Downs and the Providence Care Hospice for keeping our father comfortable in his final days.
