Doris Winters 1922-2025

Doris Irene Hill Winters, 102, Fullerton, Calif., formerly of Holton, died Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at her home.

Doris was born on a farm near Holton to John and Harriet Fricker Hill on Nov. 22, 1922. Doris attended a one room country schoolhouse for grades K-8, many times riding to school on her horse. Doris continued her education graduating from Holton High School in 1940. Following graduation, she, along with her mother and brother, moved to Santa Ana, Calif., to live with their grandmother, Clara Fricker. Her father passed away when Doris was eight years old.

She attended Santa Ana College, later transferring to UCLA where she majored in business administration. Following graduation, she worked for an uncle as an office manager in his fertilizer business in Tustin, Calif., and then worked for the Brogan family for the Culligan soft water service.

During this time she met and married Duane Winters, a stock broker, councilman and former mayor of Fullerton, Calif.

Duane and Doris were actively involved in supporting St. Jude’s Hospital of Fullerton through serving on fundraising committees and generous philanthropic donations.

Doris was a member of the St. Jude Memorial Foundation board, a director of the Fullerton Light Opera and member and past president of P.E.O. chapter HU in Fullerton. In addition, Doris was a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals.

Following the death of her husband, Doris joined the First Baptist Church of Fullerton, now Wilshire Avenue Community Church, where she served on committees and sang in the choir.

She leaves her four nieces, Sallie Stout, Rebecca Rector, Kathie Dudas and Marcie Kissel, all from Colorado; and her dear friends Marleen and Bruce Rognlien, Peggy Walsh and Rick Thompson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Joseph Hill of Grand Junction, Colo.; cousins; and many friends.

Burial will be beside her husband in Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton, Calif. Arrangements are with McAulay and Wallace Mortuary, Fullerton.
