David Reed 1947-2023

David Kent Reed, 76, Seneca, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2023.

He was born July 17, 1947, in Emporia, the son of William “Bill” G. and Dorothy L. Christy Reed. He graduated from Wetmore High School in 1965. He received his bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University and his master’s degree from Colorado State University.

Mr. Reed worked as a Colorado Rocky Mountain National Park Backwoods Ranger during the summer months for more than eight years after high school. He later was a biology teacher at Washburn High School and served as high school counselor at Hanover and Greenleaf high schools, serving students at Allen County Community College. He also worked with Three Rivers Inc. in Wamego for three years.

He was active in Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club. He was a past member of Wetmore United Methodist Church and a current member of Manhattan United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include two sisters, Susan Henry and husband Gary, Seneca, and Sandy Mitchell and husband Kenny, Dover; four nieces; a nephew; five great-nieces; and five great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Reed. 

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time. Private family inurnment will follow in Wetmore Cemetery.
