Daisy James 1927-2025

Daisy May James (Askren), beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Jan. 19, 2025, at The University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

Daisy was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Holton to Jennie May Askren (Simmons) and Roscoe “Earl” Askren. She spent her early years in Holton, where she graduated from Holton High School.

Shortly after her high school graduation, Daisy married Randal James Rountree, and together they had three daughters. The family initially lived in California before Daisy and Randal divorced in 1983. She later married Thomas Howard James, and after his death, she married Edward Albert Wright, who preceded her in death.

Over the years, Daisy lived in various places including Kansas, California and Arizona. She spent her final years at Vintage Park in Holton. She was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church.

Daisy had a profound love for horses, gardening and the outdoors. She was also adept in the kitchen. She embraced life with a joyous spirit and a love for living.

Daisy is survived by her three daughters, Susan Lee Harberson [Bill] of Yuma, Ariz., Gwendolyn Hazel Hubenthal [Dave] of Yuma, Ariz., and Janice Rae Rothschild [Doug] of Anthem, Ariz. She is also survived by four granddaughters, two grandsons, 21 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Jennie Askren, and two brothers, Melvin Askren and Lawrence Askren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26 at Holton First Baptist Church, 404 Juniper Dr., Holton. Memorials can be given to the Humane Society, as requested by Daisy.
