Clara Niehues 1948-2024
Clara Patricia Niehues, 76, Wetmore, went to her heavenly home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, following a brief illness at a Topeka hospital.
Clara was born at home south of Baileyville on Aug. 1, 1948, to Raymond and LaVerne (Mulryan) Lierz.
She attended and graduated from Baileyville High School in May 1966. After high school she worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield until she married the love of her life. She worked alongside her husband on the farm and was a homemaker until she went to work at the Wetmore Hardware, Help the Farmers, Onaga Hospital, Medicalodges, Parallel Farms and most recently Community Healthcare Systems of Onaga in Holton. She also found time to help her husband with their sprinkler system business, N-Line Lawn Service.
She attended and was a very active board member and secretary of the New Hope Family Church, Holton.
She married Glen Niehues on April 8, 1967, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville; they celebrated more than 57 years of marriage.
Clara started each day reading her Bible and spending time in prayer. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and was amazing in the kitchen. She spent her free time crocheting blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Clara is known for her BBQ sauce and she enjoyed making and selling “Clara’s Sweet And Sassy BBQ Sauce.” Over the years, she cherished the trips she was able to take with family and friends to Arizona, California, Hawaii, Ireland, and Washington, D.C.; unfortunately, there were a few left untaken.
Her favorite time was spending the holidays with her family, “girls’ days” with her daughters, attending her grandkids’ events and watching the KC Chiefs, KC Royals and KU Jayhawks games.
Clara is survived by her husband of the home and her six children, Jennifer (Steve) Strathman, Circleville, Sherri (Kent) Proffit, Seneca, Keith (Deb) Niehues, Sabetha, Stanley (Gina) Niehues, Holton, Tonia Evans, Wetmore, and Monica (Royce) Becker, Corning, who will miss her immensely. They were blessed with 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six bonus grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Kenneth Lierz, Tempe, Ariz., Ronald (Pat) Lierz, Topeka, Adrian Lierz, Shawnee, and Robert (Pam) Lierz, Topeka; her sister and best friend, Rosemary Kennedy, Kansas City, Mo.; and Glen’s brothers and sisters, in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ray and LaVerne Lierz; her in-laws, Albert and Dolores “Peg” Niehues; sister-in-law, Artemisa “Micha” Lierz; and brother-in-law, Neal “Frank” Kennedy.
The family visited with friends on Friday, Nov. 8 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Funeral services were officiated by Pastor Sterling Hudgins on Nov. 9 at the Northridge Church in Sabetha.
