Charles Gregory 1964-2025
Charles Ray Gregory, 60, of Denison, passed away Monday, May 26, 2025, at his home with family by his side.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1964, to Herbert Donald Gregory and Velma Carr Gregory. He grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Washington High School in 1982. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country.
After completing six years in the military service, Charles returned to Kansas City, where he worked as a machinist. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers and cousins and cherished the special moments he shared with his mother. In 1992, he relocated to Warsaw, Mo., where he became an active member of the community and a faithful member of New Home Baptist Church.
Charlie had a joyful spirit and a heart for others. He loved playing with his nieces, great-nieces and great-great-nieces. He also enjoyed fishing, riding his four-wheeler and working on woodworking projects — one of his greatest passions. One of the most treasured relationships in his life was with his cousin Ralph Gregory, who had been his best friend since childhood. Throughout their adult lives, they shared a special bond marked by laughter and love, often exchanging gag gifts that became a cherished and humorous tradition between them.
In 2015, Charles married the love of his life, Gwendolyn Smith. The couple later moved to Denison, where Charles continued to serve his community with pride, holding positions as both postmaster from May of 2019 to April of 2025 and councilman of Denison. While working at the post office he made many friends and witnessed to many people about the Lord. His dedication and integrity left a lasting impact.
After moving to Denison, Charlie found a true friend in Ron, who quickly became one of his closest companions in the final years of his life. The two shared a bond built on hard work, laughter and a little mischief. Together, they tackled odd jobs, built countless projects, went fishing and occasionally found themselves in trouble with their wives for doing things that were a bit too daring. Charlie and Gwen both deeply cherished this friendship, which brought joy, support and unforgettable memories.
Above all, Charlie loved the Lord with all his heart. He was passionate about sharing the love of Jesus with everyone he met. We find comfort knowing he is now home, singing with the angels and reunited with loved ones who went before him.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Larry Donald Gregory (Seretta) and William “Billy” Gregory; two sisters, infant Linda Gregory and June “Carol” Gregory; his mother-in-law, LaVonne Smith; and a niece, Windy Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gwendolyn (Smith) Gregory, and her sons, Josh, Aaron, and David; his sister-in-law, Cindy Seneker (Richard); his sister, Rebecca “Becky” Gregory Johnson (John) of Warsaw, Mo.; his brother, Michael “Mike” Gregory (Charlene) of Sarasota, Fla.; and an uncle, Nelson Gregory, of Meriden. He also leaves behind seven nieces, nine nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, several great-great-nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins and dear friends.
Charles will be remembered for his strong work ethic, unwavering faith and deep love for his family and community. His legacy of service, kindness and devotion will live on in all who knew and loved him.
Services for Charlie will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 30 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time. Charles will lie in state until 6 p.m. Thursday. Cremation will occur after the service with burial at Fort Leavenworth with full military honors at a later date.
