Charlene Montgomery 1942-2024

Anne “Charlene” Montgomery, 81, of Soldier, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2024, at The Pines South in Holton.

She was born Sept. 22, 1942, in Southwest City, Mo., the daughter of Kenneth Sherwood Roberts and Anna Marie Payne.

Charlene graduated from Immaculata High School. She was a farmwife, foster parent and for many years drove the school bus for the Auburn/Washburn school district.

She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and the Garden Club.

Charlene married Charles “Larry” Zule. They later divorced and he preceded her in death in 2006.

She married Donald Richard Montgomery on Jan. 5, 1981, in Miami, Okla. After 42 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 2022. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Anna Roberts; a son, Randy Zule and three sisters, Pat Wyrick, Nancy Bowers and Carol Nelson.

Survivors include her children, Lisa Stumpf (Bill) of Mayetta, Tracy Zule (Tiffany) of Soldier and Brandy Montgomery of Holton; sister Betty Walker (Charles) of Ft. Smith, Ark.; her “Children of the Heart,” Angie, Helen, Diana and Therese; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 18 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
