Burton Smith 1934-2020
Burton Charles Smith, 85, rural Holton, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, at his home.
He was born Aug. 24, 1934, at Holton, the son of Albert and Lucile Haag Smith. He graduated from Holton High School in 1952.
Mr. Smith served in the Kansas National Guard for several years, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He later worked for several years as foreman for the City of Holton distribution department and also worked for United Telephone of Kansas. He also was a farmer, operating a dairy and later running a stock cattle operation.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Holton.
He married Bettie Fritts on Nov. 1, 1956, in Holton. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Warren Smith and wife Kathy and Greg Smith, all of Holton; a brother, Dale Smith, Wamego; and two sisters, Linda West, Holton, and Barbara Hayes, Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Smith, at birth; a sister, Mary Shaw; and two brothers, Lyle Smith and Kenneth Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Holton Cemetery. Mr. Smith will lie in state after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home, where family and friends will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
