Bob Sumner 1925-2016

 

Charles Robert “Bob” Sumner, 90, Delia, died Friday, March 18, 2016, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka.


He was born Sept. 26, 1925, north of Delia, the son of Walter and Maude Sumner. He attended Neive Grade School and Mayetta High School.


Mr. Sumner was a farmer until 1954, when he went to work at Goodyear. He retired in 1984 and he and his wife moved to St. Marys in 1990.

He served as Delia’s mayor for several years and was a council member at Sacred Heart Church. He was currently a member of Im­maculate Conception Church in St. Marys.

He married Margaret Moore in 1947. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Dennie Sumner and wife Kathy, Topeka, and Vern Sumner and wife Janet, Rossville; a daugh­ter, Nancy, Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Bill Sumner and wife Kay and Don Sumner and wife Peg, all of Topeka; two sisters-in-law, Vir­ginia Sumner, in, Texas, and Beth Sumner, in Washington; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchil­dren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Cleve, John, Ted, Ray, Everett and Dale Sumner; and a sister, Ethel Lutz.


Mr. Sumner will lie in state at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys, where a visitation will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held at the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
