Bernita Basnett 1941-2024

Bernita Basnett 1941-2024

Bernita Wilda Basnett, 82, Hoyt, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, peacefully at home with her daughter and granddaughter by her side.

Bernita, fondly known as “Grandma Bea” by many, was born on April 29, 1941, in Concordia, to Max and Maxine Sterling. She attended high school in Concordia.

Bernita was married to the love of her life, Darrell Basnett, for 54 years, prior to his death in 2017. Together the couple raised four daughters: Lessa, Carol, JoLynn and Cynthia.

In 2010, Darrell and Bernita relocated from Concordia to Hoyt, so they could be closer to family. Bernita was employed for five years at Calderwood’s Grocery Store, where she enjoyed working and getting to know everyone in town.

For the past decade, Bernita’s family was blessed to have her living in Hoyt, where she was able to do what she loved most – spending her days with her beloved great-grandchildren, fishing, going to bingo and watching all her great-grandkids’ activities.

Bernita requested that no funeral services be held.

There was absolutely nothing that made Grandma Bea happier than spending summer days at the ballfields watching her grandkids and their friends play ball. In her memory, her family will be planting shade trees at the RV ballfields.

Memorial donations to go towards the purchase of shade trees can be made to: Bernita Basnett, Denison State Bank, 210 Hwy. K-214, Hoyt, KS 66440.
