Artie Hatle 1931-2024

Artemis “Artie” Levas Babb Hatle, 92, of Holton, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at The Pines South in Holton.
She was born July 7, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of James and Anna (Hohler) Levas.
Artie graduated from Topeka High School and attended college at Washburn University.
She was a lifelong sportsperson. In her earlier years, she played shortstop for a select Fast Pitch Softball club in Topeka and later played for softball teams in Holton. For many years, she had been a member of the Holton Saddle Club where she participated in various events, including calf roping and barrel racing.
Artie loved spending time with her grandkids and great-grandchildren. She volunteered at her church for many years. She was very proud of her Greek heritage. Artie’s finest talent was finding mischief wherever she went; her family cherishes the many memories of her adventures in mischievousness.
She worked at various jobs - Head Start and Coach House Café in Holton; she was an over-the-road trucker and spent many years as a hospice home health aide and most recently was the bookkeeper for Hatle Trucking.
Artie was a member of the Holton Evangel Church, formerly Evangel United Methodist Church, for many years.
She married Virgil Babb in 1951; they later divorced. Artie married Clifford Hatle on Nov. 17, 1985, in Victorville, Calif.; they celebrated more than 38 years of marriage.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford of the home; son, Dwayne Babb (Marion) of Lawrence; daughter, Patricia Kessler (Rob) of Ocala, Fla.; three grandchildren, Taj Hayden (Lindsay), Chelsea Carpenter and Nathan Babb; and four great-grandchildren, Elijah, Natalie, Victor and Eliza.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Anna Levas; daughter, Anna Hayden; sister, Regina Krebsbach; brother, Teddy Levas; stepdad, Clyde Cramer; stepmom, June Cramer; and stepbrother P.F.C. Lawrence H. Clouse.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 17 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. The family would prefer casual dress. Burial will follow at the Holton Cemetery. Artie will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home. Family will greet friends from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
