John Hladky 1946-2025

John Garnett Hladky, 79, of St. Marys, died on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at the Colmery-O’Neil Veterans Medical Center in Topeka surrounded by his family.

John was born on March 11, 1946, in Onaga, the son of Garnett and Marjorie (Wells) Hladky. He attended grade school in St. Clere and graduated from Emmett High School.

John met Delores Stueve in Emmett and they were married on Feb. 11, 1971; they were later divorced. John later married Sheri Bryant; she preceded him in death on August 25, 2024.

John served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968. After high school, John worked for several local construction companies and was a CDL truck driver. John worked for many years in the Emmett area farming and ranching. He loved to fish, play pool and enjoyed spending hours playing cards, especially Pitch and Blackjack. John was a simple man and he enjoyed watching KU basketball.

John is survived by his daughter, Suzanne (Christopher) Mapes and son, Shawn Hladky; stepsons, Jeremy (Stephanie Williams) Bryant, Jeff (Amy) Bryant and Jace (Rebecca) Bryant; grandchildren, Toby Hladky and Abigail Mapes; sister, Joan Henneke; and brother-in-law, Bud Bostelmann.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, James Hladky, Joyce Hladky, Joyie Bostelmann and Judy Hladky; and his stepson, Joshua Bryant.

John’s wishes were to be cremated and his remains will be scattered on the family farm at a later date.

Memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to Meals on Wheels St. Mary’s and may be left in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple St., St Marys, KS 66536.
