Bette Ross 1950-2025
Bette Coleman Ross, 74, passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2025, in Holladay, Utah.
Bette was born in Holton on May 8, 1950, to David and Georgine Coleman. She grew up working at Denison State Bank, her father’s company, and graduated as a Holton High Wildcat in 1968. Bette twirled baton during high school and was at Washburn University for twirling camp when the big tornado hit in June 1966. Prior to high school, Bette held Holton’s high jump record for decades, jumping scissors-style, clearing a horizontal height above her own head.
Best known for her sharp wit and playful sense of humor, Bette was always ready with a quick comeback or a clever remark that could bring laughter to any room.
Bette was a proud University of Kansas (KU) Jayhawk (BS in education, 1972) and a member of Alpha Phi sorority. A gifted card player, she excelled at games like bridge and pitch, often outpacing her opponents with skill and speed. One of her favorite games was “Oh Hell,” which played an unexpected role in her life while at KU: it’s how she met Rod, who would become her beloved husband of 52 – an even deck of cards - years. Their shared love of cards became a cherished part of their life together.
Beyond the card table, Bette was an avid golfer with an impressive record — she had seven holes in one! She played St. Andrews on her 65th birthday. Whether competing on the course or enjoying a casual round with friends and family, she brought the same fun and competitive spirit that defined so many aspects of her life.
Bette dedicated countless hours to volunteering with and holding leadership positions in organizations such as the Jaycee Auxiliary, Junior League of Salt Lake, P.E.O., PTA and the National Charity League.
Over the years, she was a member of Cottonwood Country Club, the Salt Lake Country Club, Entrada at Snow Canyon and The Town Club.
A big sports fan and always a Jayhawk, Bette continued to root for KU. She also attended many U of U football, basketball and gymnastics events. Other pastimes included traveling, playing tennis, reading mystery books, playing the piano and attending plays.
She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church. Her values of kindness, generosity and connection were evident in all that she did. Bette was a wonderful mother, forgiving wife, fun-loving Meemaw and a loyal friend.
Bette is survived by her husband, Rod Ross; daughters Stephanie Ross Lunt and Samantha Grant (Alex Grant); granddaughters Eleanor and Greta Grant; and sister Patricia “Tricia” Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Linda Suchman and Sara James.
Bette’s legacy is one of laughter, love and generosity. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. A special thanks to all her caregivers who helped in her final years. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association.
