Darell Kern 1933-2024
Darell Wayne Kern, 90, of Mayetta, died Friday, June 14, 2024.
He was an irreplaceable man. If you had the chance to meet him and the great opportunity to know him, you would know he was “one of a kind.”
He was born Nov. 11, 1933, in Mayetta, the son of Everett and Mary “Lucy” (Hunter) Kern. He graduated from Mayetta High School.
Darell served in the U.S. Army and spent time in Korea.
He grew up in Jackson County and spent a full life there, a lifelong farmer from crops to cattle, and all the hay and livestock in between. He knew all about hard work and manual labor.
Summers of homemade ice cream and salted watermelon, he truly enjoyed the simple life.
He was a great outdoorsman. Fishing, hunting and trapping, cutting his own firewood, time in the timber is where he loved to be! Too many coon hunts to count, and the sound of his coondogs running and treeing a raccoon was music to his ears.
Darell married Carol “Sally” Jacobson on Jan. 9, 1964, and they recently celebrated 60 years together. They made a great team and enjoyed their beloved dogs, Okie & Jack. They took many trips and cherished time with their kids and grandkids.
Family includes his wife, Carol “Sally” Kern; and three children, Susan Kern, Mark Kern and Michael Kern.
Papa couldn’t be more proud of his grandchildren and loved every visit: Daryl Schmidt, Emilee Bush, Mirisa Wyss, Megan Kern (deceased), Ashley McCune, Luke McCune, Haylee Kern, Jake McCune, Brady Kern and Noelle McCune. Great-grandchildren included Bentley Wyss, Aurora Overby and Waylon Schmidt.
Cremation is planned. Private burial will take place at Mayetta Cemetery in Mayetta.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mayetta Methodist Church.
