Alfred Adkins 1944-2017
Alfred T. Adkins, 72, Hiawatha, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, at Hiawatha Community Hospital.
He was born Sept. 22, 1944, near Leona, the son of Samuel Franklin and Maude Randall Adkins. He grew up in the Leona-Denton area, where he attended country school, and lived in Doniphan and Brown counties nearly all his life.
Mr. Adkins farmed south of Troy for nearly 20 years and later worked as a janitor and drove the activity school bus for Troy schools for a number of years before working for the Doniphan County Road Department, where he retired. He and his wife also owned and operated Carolyn’s Place in Troy for 20 years.
He married Carolyn Mae Baxter on March 7, 1965, in Blair. She died April 11, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Erma Pole; four brothers, Sam, Melvin, Jack and Dick; and an infant brother.
Survivors include three sons, Samuel Adkins, Hiawatha, Jeff Adkins, Junction City, and Bobby Adkins, Holton; four brothers, Delbert Adkins, Hiawatha, Danny Adkins, Severance, Art Adkins, Troy, and John Adkins, Beeville, Texas; four sisters, Betty Meyers, Bendena, Gert Hamilton, White Cloud, and Cleo Stewart and Joyce Moppin, both of Severance; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland with Don Harter officiating. Interment will follow in Iola Cemetery south of Sparks. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Friday, where family will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
