Roena Collins 1930-2016
Roena Nadine Collins, 86, Topeka, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, at Medicalodges Jackson County.
She was born May 12, 1930, in Topeka, the daughter of Ralph Washington and Daisy Anna Tubbs Oldham. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1948.
Mrs. Collins was a homemaker and later worked for the Kansas Department of Revenue from 1982 to 1992.
She was an active member of Shawnee Heights Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and served as President of the Women’s Missionary Society.
She married Duane D. Hunter on May 15, 1950, in Topeka. He died Sept. 3, 1964. She married Edward Nelson Collins on January 9, 1965, in Collins, Mo. He died Aug. 18, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her father, Ralph Washington; her stepmother, Anna Marie Minch Washington; and a twin sister, Roberta Maxine “Bert” Jones.
Survivors include a son Duane Daniel “Dan” Hunter Jr. and wife Debi, Topeka; a daughter, Claudia Kay Garner and husband Troy, Holton; a brother: Dale Oldham and wife Marilyn, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Betty I. Goodnow and husband Clyde, in Missouri; five grandchildren, Trudi Richardson and husband Shawn, Holton, Stephanie Auguste and husband Ewan, Topeka, Jeana Shumway, Horton, Jason Garner and wife Anna, Topeka, and Stephanie Schuetz, Holton; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence Ave., Topeka. Interment will be held in Rochester Cemetery, 1200 N.W. Menninger Road, Topeka. Mrs. Colins will lie in state after 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.
