'Condensed' Relay for Life scheduled for Oct. 15

A condensed version of the Jackson County Relay For Life will be held 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, inside Jackson Heights High School at the gym, it has been reported.

The Jackson County Relay For Life was originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6, but due to a lack of volunteers, it was pushed back until October.

Committee volunteers Carol Buehler and Jim Dodson reported that the event will kick off with a dinner for cancer survivors and caregivers from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the commons area of the high school.

Buehler said that a letter is being mailed to area cancer survivors inviting them to the free dinner.

Since the list of area cancer survivors may not be complete, Buehler said people may contact her or Janice Schweigen for more information or to RSVP to the free the dinner.

At 7 p.m., an opening ceremony for the Relay For Life walk will be held. The walk, which will still be a relay for area teams and individuals, is being held around the school’s gymnasium. 

The luminaries will be lit at 8 p.m., Buehler said, and the names of those being honored with be read aloud. 

Luminaries can be purchased in honor of or in memory of those with cancer for $10 a piece.

They can be purchased during the event or in advance by contacting Buehler.

So far, three teams have signed up for the relay, and members have raised $2,307.

Funds from the annual event go towards cancer research, educational programs, advocacy and patient service programs.

The Jackson County Relay For Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society, has been held in the county for more than 20 years.
