Q4 Road north of Holton to close for bridge work
Q4 Road, between 270th and 278th Roads north of Holton, will be closed starting next Monday, Aug. 29, due to a bridge replacement project, it was reported.
Terry Mick, bridge and special project manager for the county, outlined the project and several other upcoming projects during a recent Jackson County Commission meeting.
The bridge is located at Q4 and 275th Roads and was built in 1925, it was reported.
The county is also working with Shawnee County to replace a bridge on 94th Road along the southern county line. Mick reported that the right-of-ways have been acquired and power poles have been moved in preparation for the new bridge.
Mick said that work on the bridge at 94th Road is likely to begin this winter.
In addition, Mick said that crewmembers have installed a nine-foot tube, two seven-foot tubes and an eight-foot tube in several locations around the county.
Next month, Mick said, crews are expected to begin work on the bridge at 142nd and D.3 Roads.
Earlier this summer, it was reported that a tube between D and E Roads on 142nd Road had washed out. A bridge used to be utilized at that location until it was replaced with a tube in 1988.
It has been determined now that a new 30-foot steel beam bridge needs to be built at that location.
The county is also in the process of rebuilding 214th Road between Q4 and R4 Roads. That road is expected to be closed for the next several weeks.
According to the county, crewmembers are cleaning ditches, removing trees, sloping banks, resetting tubes and widening the road, which has narrowed over time.
In other business, according to the approved minutes from Aug. 8, the commission:
* Met in executive session for 10 minutes with Jackson County Clerk Kathy Mick and Terry Mick, bridge and special project manager, to discuss a personnel matter. No action was taken back in open session.
* Met in executive session by phone with Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse for 15 minutes. No action was taken back in open session.
* Canvassed the results of the primary election. All 19 of the provisional ballots were counted toward the final tally of the votes cast.
* Heard a weekly report from John Kennedy, Banner Creek Reservoir director, who reported that revenues at the reservoir for the week of July 31 – Aug. 6 were $3,598.
In the past, the reservoir has hosted a Rock-It Fest as a fundraiser for the Banner Creek Science Center. Kennedy inquired if there was interest to host a fall concert at reservoir.
Chairwoman Janet Zwonitzer said that the science center would not be hosting a concert this fall but said that discussions have been held with the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce about the possibility of holding a concert in conjunction with the Fourth of July celebration.
* Met with Chad Phillips, custodian, to discuss the circle drive project on the east side of the Jackson County Courthouse.
* Left their chambers and recessed to the courtroom at 2 p.m. and returned at 3:51 p.m.
* Signed a resolution to vacate 2,640 feet of F Road north of 182nd Road.
* Viewed two letters regarding land purchased within boundaries of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
* Met in executive session for 30 minutes with County Clerk Kathy Mick to discuss a personnel matter. No action was taken back in open session.
* Approved a motion to appoint Ron Parrett to the Jackson County Fire District Board #2.
* Met in executive session with Mick for 15 minutes to discuss a personnel matter. No action was taken back in open session.
* Signed a payroll change notice for Bryson Wheeler, who was approved as a part-time hire for the sheriff's office.
* Adjourned the meeting at 4:30 p.m.
