Opal Bryant 1921-2016

 

Opal M. Bryant, 94, Wetmore, died Monday, Aug. 8, 2016 at Medicalodges Jackson County in Holton.

She was born Dec. 16, 1921, at the home place north of Goff, the daughter of Edward and Ina Hawley Wittenbach. She graduated from Wetmore High School in 1940 and spent most of her life in the Wetmore community.

Mrs. Bryant worked at Wetmore School and later was a homemaker before she and her husband moved from Sabetha to Wetmore in 1957. They purchased the Hy-Klas Gro­cery Store that year and operated it for 13 years. They later owned and operated a laundromat/carwash and worked together at the Holton nursing home now known as Medi­calodges.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Wetmore.

She married Boyd Bryant on Feb. 14, 1942, in Sabetha. He died in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ione Fletcher; and a brother, Edwin Wittenbach.

Survivors include three daugh­ters, Bonnie Wambeke and hus­band Norm, Topeka, Karen Dieck­mann and husband Bob, Holton, and Brenda Fund and husband Alan, Topeka; two sisters, Dona McCulley, Holton, and Lola Stat­telman and husband Rich, Topeka; a brother, Melvin Wittenbach, Hastings, Neb.; eight grandchil­dren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Wetmore Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
