Hoyt clinic moves to new home

The Family Practice Associates clinic in Hoyt has moved to its new home at 117 W. Third St. in Hoyt. 

Construction of the new clinic was recently completed, and the facility has been open to patients since April 21, according to Carrie Saia, Holton Community Hospital chief executive officer.

An open house for the new clinic has been set from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18. Free sports physicals will be available that day. 

For the past 12 years, the clinic has been operated out of a residential home that the hospital rented in Hoyt. 

The new clinic includes a lobby with a large bathroom that is handicapped accessible, a reception area, four exam rooms, another bathroom, a utility room, a medication room, a lab room, a storage room and a break room.

“We went from two to four exam rooms,” Saia said. “There was never a designated lab area before. It was in the kitchen. So now we have a private area.”

The hospital purchased land from Denison State Bank, just off of Kansas Highway 214, in 2014. 

Jamie Stuke, nurse practitioner, and two other staff members - an office medical assistant and a registered nurse - operate the clinic. Dr. Malia Warner also works at the clinic one day every other week. 

“The hope is that if we ever get busy enough, we could accommodate two providers working here full-time,” Saia said. “We built the clinic with that in mind in case there’s a large enough need.”

For the past 12 years, the clinic has served patients from that residential home in Hoyt, mentioned earlier, that had limited privacy and parking. 

“It was supposed to be a temporary location,” Saia said. “The city was supportive of us being in Hoyt and having a dedicated provider, like Jamie, here. She’s really invested a lot in the community.” 

Chance Construction, owned by D.J. Chance of Mayetta, built the clinic, which is more than 1,800-square feet. Schwerdt Design Group, Inc. of Topeka served as the architect. Saia said the new clinic cost the hospital more than $300,000 to construct. 

Some of the equipment and furniture at the clinic is new, such as the cabinetry in all the exam rooms, while other items were just moved from the previous location, Saia said. 

Last year, the Holton City Commission agreed to issue $3.6 million in health care facilities revenue bonds on behalf of Rural Health Resources in order to refinance existing bonds used in the construction of the Holton hospital, finance the remodeling of the hospital’s physical and cardiac rehabilitation departments and to construct the new clinic in Hoyt. 

“Our patients have said they really enjoy the privacy of the new clinic,” said Brielle Rice, office medical assistant. “It is so much easier to get patients who are in wheelchairs into the building and into a room. They very much appreciate all the upgrades.”
