Holton's City-Wide Cleanup Day scheduled for Saturday

Once again, it’s time for Holton residents to clean out their houses, garages and sheds and bring unwanted materials to the soccer fields at Countryside Park for the annual Holton City-Wide Spring Cleanup Day.

The city’s annual cleanup day, set from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 at Countryside Park, allows city residents to dispose of unwanted items for free, it was reported. Restrictions on accepted materials will be enforced at the site, including proof of Holton residency, and no contractor or commercial business material will be accepted.

Items that will be accepted at the site include carpet, clothing, paper, cardboard, furniture, mattresses, clean wood, shingles, tar paper, cabinets, porcelain fixtures, wire, metal, bicycles and tricycles, appliances without refrigerant, water heaters, sinks, iron and other similar materials.

Materials that will not be accepted at the site include household trash, tires, paint, oil, gasoline, hazardous materials, chemicals and batteries. Yard waste also will not be accepted at the pick-up site, but may instead be taken to the city’s brush disposal site in northeastern Holton at no charge.

Some hazardous materials and chemicals may be collected for disposal by Jackson County’s hazardous waste department, which will set up a trailer at the collection site. It was reported that the Jackson County Recycling Center will accept eligible recyclable and hazardous waste materials from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. that day.

The City of Holton reserves the right to refuse any material for disposal. For more information on the citywide cleanup, call City Hall at 364-2721.
