Population estimate shows decline in Jackson County

As of July 1 of last year, Jackson County’s overall population had fallen by more than 125 in the previous 12-month period, according to population estimates released in recent days by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Jackson County, which had an official 2010 census of 13,462 residents, listed a July 1, 2015 population estimate of 13,338. according to the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program (PEP). The July 1, 2014 estimate for the county was 13,464, the bureau reported.

The Census Bureau takes a count of the U.S. population and gathers other information every 10 years, with the last census in 2010 and the next census in 2020. In between, the bureau produces annual population estimates for the nation, its states, cities and counties based on examinations of birth and death records and information from federal agencies, like the Internal Revenue Service, that show population trends.

According to the estimates, Jackson County’s population has gone up and down since the 2010 census. The 2014 estimate of 13,464 marked an increase over the 2013 estimate of 13,333; in 2012, the estimate was 13,419, down from the 13,444 estimate in 2011 and the 13,470 estimate in 2010, according to the Census Bureau.

Most neighboring counties saw their population estimates increasing in 2015, the Census Bureau reported. The 2015 estimates saw the population up by 76 to 18,930 in Jefferson County, up by 52 to 10,227 in Nemaha County, up by 449 to 23,298 in Pottawatomie County and up by 188 to 178,725 in Shawnee County.

Two neighboring counties saw their population estimates declining in 2015, according to the Census Bureau. Atchison County posted a decline of 93 to 16,398, while Brown County saw its estimated population go down by 28 to 9,776, it was reported.

The Census Bureau generally reports on population estimates for counties in late March and for cities at about mid-year on an annual basis, it was reported.
