Opal Pittenger 1916-2016
Opal Audrey Pittenger, 99, Holton, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016.
She was born Aug. 11, 1916, in Goff, the daughter of Chester George and Grace Belle Porter Sourk. She attended Fairview Grade School and graduated from Goff High School in 1934.
Mrs. Pittenger worked as a switchboard operator for JBN Telephone Company in Soldier beginning in 1956. She then worked for United Telephone in Holton from 1958 to 1980 and from 1980 to 1985 in Athens, Texas, before retiring after 29 years as an operator.
She attended First United Methodist Church in Holton and was also a member of the “Elite” Soldier Wednesday Night Club.
She married Charlie Louis Pittenger on Oct. 31, 1935, in Hiawatha. He died May 1, 1990. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Pat Moulden; a son, Rex Pittenger; a sister, Jessie McConnaughey; two brothers, Clyde and Wayne Sourk; and two grandchildren, Randy and Tammy Scott.
Survivors include two daughters, Ina Grace Bryan and husband Richard, Kansas City, and Phyllis J. Scott and husband Bob, Holton; a son, Steve Pittenger and wife Barb, Shawnee; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held this morning (Monday) at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial followed in Olive Hill Cemetery west of Holton.
