Hunny Mae Kids opens on Square

Offering affordable clothing, shoes, accessories and toys for kids of all ages, Hunny Mae Kids has recently opened on the north side of the Holton Square.

Charity and Josh Payne of Topeka opened the new and gently used clothing and consignment store last month at 106 W. 5th St. in the building previously occupied by Lee’s Flower & Gift Shop.

“My main goal is to be a blessing to the community,” Charity said. “I remember struggling in the beginning when I had kids so I want to offer a wide range of options for people.”

The couple is familiar with Jackson County, as they have family who live in the area. 

“We’ve always loved it up here,” she said. “So when we found out this building was available to rent, we had to check it out. I’ve really wanted to open a store for the past 10 years.”

The store was open in time for November’s Second Saturday event. 

Currently, pre-owned children’s clothing, from newborn to teenage sizes, is offered, as well as shoes and toys. 

“By the end of December, we plan to have a lot of brand new merchandise,” she said. “We will also have a small line of women’s clothing available.”

In addition to clothing and accessories, daily essential items for moms and babies, such as cloth and disposable diapers, wipes, lotions, bibs, soaps and bottles, are offered. 

Some of the children’s brands currently offered at the shop include Tea Collection, Cotton Babies, Mud Pie and Pediped shoe line. 

The couple does offer limited consignment for area residents who want to sell items in the shop, but the couple is also willing to buy gently used clothing, toys, shoes and baby gear outright as well. 

“We can also cater to students of any of the local dance studios,” she said. “We can order shoes they might need for their recitals.”

The store includes a play area for the kids so parents can focus on shopping while in the store, Charity said. 

“A lot of people are excited we are here, and we just want to find out what Holton wants,” she said. “We want to cater to them. So we definitely want people to tell us their needs.”

Josh also is the owner and operator of a truck company, and Charity previously worked for a Topeka hospital. The store’s name, Hunny Mae Kids, was inspired by the couple’s daughter and son.

Hunny Mae Kids is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The Paynes accept cash, debit and credit cards. 

The store will be open at 6 a.m. on Friday during the early morning Christmas sales event around the Square. The store will also have extended hours during this weekend’s Second Saturday event.
